A Few Simple Ways to Fix Common Computer Problems

We all have problems with our PCs from time to time, but what are the common problems and what should we do to fix them. Here are five simple techniques to help solve common computer hardware problems.

Have a look inside.

There is no reason why you should not look inside your PC to see if there are any problems with the components. There is only a low level of voltage to the components inside the PC, so it is not a big problem to have a peek. Of course you should not open up the case with the power still plugged in, it’s sensible to remove the power cable first. People who have not looked inside the PC itself are often surprised how simple it looks. What you can check for is lose components. Reseating components sometimes fixes common problems, like the memory modules.

Record what you do.

Make a note of everything you have done as you go along, and ensure you include any error messages. This is often overlooked but is important for later trouble shooting. Record the error message including some info from a “Blue Screen” error, which often will indicate what the origin of the issue is.

Try and try again.

The best way to determine what is the cause of the problem, is to try to isolate it and rule out what is not causing the problem. It is often good to remove peripherals one by one, recording it as you go along, ruling out possibilities. Each time you have made a change test it.

Check the cabling.

Many computer related problems are caused by issues with the cabling. It’s important to check that all the cables are plugged in firmly and if not remove the cable the re-insert it. Check USB, IDE and power cables. Much like when you are checking the inside of the PC, ensure all the cards and firmly plugged into the motherboard.

Stay calm and relaxed.

We are often too afraid to do something that might make the situation worse. Doing something, rather than leaving the problem, is often the best way to learn about computers. You’ll get a great deal of satisfaction if you manage to fix the issue yourself, by having a go. If you get frustrated, remember you should not take more than a few hours before you need to get some help. Have a go yourself, but also get a second opinion. You’ll be surprised how simple a problem is fixed, and soon realise that you could well have done it yourself but were not looking in the right place.

Good luck.
